Prime for Students and 18–24 year-olds: six months free

Amazon runs a discounted Prime for two groups: students enrolled at a higher-education institution in the UK or the Republic of Ireland, and anyone aged 18 to 24. Both start with a six-month free trial, then pay half the regular price: £4.49 a month or £47.49 a year.

• Students sign up with an academic email address (Amazon offers another route if you do not have one) and may be asked for proof of enrolment. The discount lasts while you are a student, for up to four years.
• 18 to 24 year-olds upload a driving licence or passport to prove their age. The discount lasts until you turn 25.
• The discounted membership can run for at most six years in total, then becomes regular Prime.

During the six-month trial you get regular Prime benefits with three differences Amazon lists: no sharing with household members, a single one-month Twitch channel subscription, and no Kindle Owners' Lending Library.

Who Prime suits

Prime pays for itself fastest for regular Amazon shoppers: unlimited One-Day Delivery replaces delivery charges on every eligible order. It also suits households that stream, since Prime Video comes bundled, and anyone planning a big shop around Prime Day or Black Friday, because Prime-only deals and early Lightning Deal access need a membership. Students and under-25s get the strongest offer of all: six months free, then half price.

2. Sign in to Amazon.co.uk, or create an account.
3. Pick Prime Monthly or Prime Annual and confirm the 30-day free trial.

Amazon's help page is clear on the payment side: the trial needs a current, valid credit card, and pre-paid cards cannot be used.

Cancelling and refunds
