Audible is Amazon's audiobook service, with a collection Amazon puts at 900,000 titles, plus podcasts and Audible Originals. You listen in the free Audible app on your phone, or on Alexa devices, Fire tablets, Kindle and Sonos. Audible runs two monthly plans, Standard at £5.99 and Premium at £8.99, and new members get 30 days free on either.

Audible's membership page on amazon.co.uk offers Try Standard Free and Try Premium Plus Free: 30 days at no cost, then the plan's monthly price until you cancel. The button on this page opens that membership page directly. There is no code to type; the free trial is Audible's standard offer to new members.

Amazon Prime members get more. Audible's Prime page says Prime members pick two free titles in their first 30-day trial instead of one, and the titles are theirs to keep.

Standard suits people who want one new book a month and are happy to listen while subscribed. Premium suits people who want to build a library they own, and anyone who will make use of the Plus Catalogue of titles included at no extra cost. Audible also offers a two-credit Premium plan and annual memberships.

What a credit is

On Premium, a credit buys a title to keep. Audible's help centre says any title you get with a credit is yours to keep, and that you can buy extra credits when you run out.

Premium or Premium Plus?

They are the same plan. Audible's help centre says the Premium Plus plan is being renamed Premium and that nothing else has changed, so you will see both names on Amazon and Audible pages for a while. Amazon's membership page still says Premium Plus at £8.99.

Who Audible suits

Audible is made for time your hands are busy and your ears are free: commuting, driving, running, the gym, housework, cooking. It suits people who want to get through more books than they have time to read, fans of long fantasy and thriller series, and anyone who likes full-cast productions (Audible lists full-cast editions of the Harry Potter books). Prime members get the best start, with two free titles.

How to start the trial

1. Press Start your free trial on Amazon on this page. It opens Audible's membership page on amazon.co.uk.
2. Choose Try Standard Free or Try Premium Plus Free (Premium Plus is the plan Audible now calls Premium).
3. Sign in with your Amazon account and add a valid credit card.
4. Download the Audible app, pick your first audiobook and press play.

Is there an Audible promo code or discount code?

No — and none is needed. Audible's free trial is applied on its own membership page.

Who can take the trial

Amazon's Audible page says a customer can take a free trial if they have not taken one in the last 12 months on the same account or card, and that the trial needs a valid card. Audible's help centre adds that Prime members who have already had the two-title trial can take the Standard 30-day trial.

Cancelling

Audible memberships cancel monthly from your account; Audible's plans renew automatically after the 30 days. Titles you got with a credit stay yours. Audible's help centre says cancelling ends member benefits: exclusive discounts, Plus Catalogue titles and unused credits.
