You do not need a Kindle

This is the most common question about Kindle Unlimited. Amazon's answer is direct: you can read on the free Kindle app on iPhone, Android, Mac and PC, on Fire tablets, or in any web browser through Kindle Cloud Reader. A Kindle is a nicer screen for long reading, but it is not required.

Kindle Unlimited vs Prime Reading

Prime members already get Prime Reading, a rotating selection of books and magazines included with Prime. Kindle Unlimited is a separate, much larger catalogue — millions of titles against Prime Reading's hundreds each month — for £9.49 a month. It suits people who read several eBooks a month.

Who it suits

Kindle Unlimited suits heavy readers, series bingers (Amazon pitches it for rereading a favourite series or finding a new one, across genres from mysteries and romance to biographies and business), readers who want to try new authors without paying per book, and magazine readers, since issues are included. Because audiobooks are part of the catalogue too, it also suits people who switch between reading and listening.

How to start the trial

1. Press Start your free trial on Amazon on this page. It opens Kindle Unlimited's own sign-up page.
2. Sign in to Amazon.co.uk and confirm the 30-day free trial.
3. Find titles with the Kindle Unlimited badge and tap Add to library.
4. Read in the Kindle app or on a Kindle. To stop before paying, cancel in Manage your Kindle Unlimited Membership before day 30.

Is there a Kindle Unlimited promo code or discount code?

No — and none is needed. The 30-day free trial is Amazon's own offer for new subscribers.

Who can take the trial

Amazon says new subscribers can take the free trial if they have not signed up for one in the last 12 months on the same account or card, and that the trial needs a valid card. Kindle Unlimited on Amazon.co.uk is for readers in the UK, Gibraltar, Jersey, the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Ireland.

Cancelling

Go to Manage your Kindle Unlimited Membership and select Cancel membership. When the membership ends you lose access to your Kindle Unlimited titles.
