Which cashback site fits which shopper

Booking a holiday, switching broadband or renewing insurance: TopCashback. The £10 sign-up bonus unlocks after £10 of approved cashback, and one big transaction usually clears that on its own. It also lists the longest set of shops we cover here, with 5,500+ UK retailers, and passes on 100% of the commission retailers pay it, according to its own terms.

A smaller first target: Quidco. Its £10 joining bonus needs only £5 of confirmed cashback, so a modest first shop gets you there. Quidco belongs to MONY Group, the company behind MoneySuperMarket, and pays out from just £1.

Weekly shop, coffee and takeaways: Cheddar. You buy a digital gift card in the app for exactly the value of your basket, the cashback is in your wallet before you reach the till, and you pay with the card. Tesco pays up to 4.5%, Sainsbury's 3.5% and Costa Coffee 9%.

The best set-up is all three: the bonuses are separate, the shops overlap, and you can compare the rate for each purchase before you spend.

How to choose a cashback site: five checks

1) The joining bonus and what unlocks it. £10 sounds the same everywhere, but TopCashback asks for £10 of approved cashback, Quidco for £5 of confirmed cashback and Cheddar for £5 in 30 days. A lower bar means your bonus lands sooner.

2) Speed. Click-through sites record a purchase as pending first and make it withdrawable once the retailer confirms the sale; Cheddar pays at the moment you buy.

3) The shops you actually use. Check the site lists your supermarket, your airline or your energy supplier before you join.

4) How you get paid. Look at the minimum withdrawal and the routes on offer: bank transfer, PayPal or gift card.

5) Whether the bonus needs a link. Quidco's bonus attaches only through a refer-a-friend link, and TopCashback and Cheddar bonuses attach through their link or code at sign-up. Join through the right door the first time.

Get the bonus first time

Open the site's link before you register, not after. Join each site with a new account: all three bonuses are for new members only.

On click-through sites, start every shop from the site, not from the retailer, and switch off ad-blockers for the purchase. Quidco's help centre also asks you to clear your browser's cache and cookies before joining through the link so the referral tracks cleanly.

Only your own purchases count. Bonuses, free purchases and goodwill cashback do not count towards the TopCashback or Quidco thresholds.
